Plugable's male DVI to female HDMI passive port adapter allows you to convert your computer's DVI-I or DVI-D video output port to HDMI so that you can use an HDMI-based display, such as a flat-screen TV, as your computer's monitor. An HDMI cable (not included) is necessary to complete the connection.
HDMI is built on the DVI standard, so to transmit a DVI video signal to an HDMI device requires only a simple, passive port adapter like this one. Simply put, the adapter only modifies the physical connection type. The adapter makes no changes to the digital video signal that is sent from your computer.
Although the adapter allows you to use an HDMI cable to link your computer to your flat-screen TV, it does not provide new HDMI-specific functionality such as allowing audio to be transmitted to your TV via the HDMI connection. That still will require a separate cable between your computer's audio output port and an audio input port on your TV.
